Frisbee Golf? [Jul. 7th, 2007|10:13 am]
[Tags|]

Does anyone know if there is anywhere near the Square to play Frisbee Golf? It doesn't have to be an official Folf course - I'm thinking there has to be at least one unofficial course at Tufts. However I have a car so I'm willing to drive if there are courses further afield. Thanks!

Best Idea of the Weekend: Books on CD [Apr. 21st, 2004|12:54 pm]
The drive between Boston and Philly is about the worst six hours you can spend in a car. It’s a short enough drive that it doesn’t take all day, but its long enough to take most of the day and leave the driver stressed and tired. I did the drive over the long Patriot’s Day weekend and it was smooth sailing both ways thanks to my new best friend the book on CD. I’ve known about books on tape for a while, but in the past I’ve always needed to find something that could be enjoyed by my passenger as well as myself, and usually ended up with something merely sorta entertaining. On this drive I got to pick the books all by my lonesome, and it was almost as good as seeing a movie. I didn’t even mind the hour long construction backup I got stuck in somewhere in the middle of Connecticut.

Reading: Notes from a Small Island, Bill Bryson [Apr. 21st, 2004|12:53 pm]
Another book on CD I’m listening too. Bryson is a well-known travel writer I first discovered when I read A Walk in the Woods about his summer spent walking the Appalachian Trail. Notes from a Small Island is about a trip he took in the early 90s around England. Bryson lived in England for more then two decades but then decided to move back to the US (a subject he covers in other books he’s written). As an anglophile and major fan of England I had high hopes for the book but find myself under whelmed. The beginning chapters are the most engaging and funny as he discusses his early experiences in England and generally covers familiar territory. Later in the book he gets out into unfamiliar countryside and has little interaction with people and I found my attention drifting.

Reading: Shark Trouble, Peter Benchley [Apr. 21st, 2004|12:53 pm]
I got Shark Trouble on CD from the library for my drive to Philly this past weekend. It’s a non-fiction collection of stories and advice from Benchley, the author of Jaws and longtime ocean enthusiast. He covers a lot of ground from sharing experiences he’s had with sharks to how to avoid drowning in the ocean. The stories were engaging and the information and advice well presented and solid. He also includes a kids story he wrote explaining how sharks are important to man and the environment. Definitely worth a read if you’re interested in sharks or the ocean.

Best Idea of the Day: Nine Hours [Apr. 15th, 2004|10:14 am]
That's nine hours of uninterrupted sleep. The most I've gotten in one stint in weeks. Man did it feel good! Now I can go back to six or seven hours.

Time to put the vanity in the vanity project [Apr. 13th, 2004|03:10 pm]
Currently I know of two semi-regular readers (widderslainte and stella). There may be more of you, however, so I'd be mighty obliged if y'all would leave a comment and let me know you read.

Worst Idea of the Night: Dumb Quote [Apr. 13th, 2004|01:41 pm]
Note to self: don't make dumb Indiana Jones references when you're wearing a fedora. Especially when there are strangers within earshot.

Best Idea of the Night: Anna's Taqueria [Apr. 13th, 2004|01:38 pm]
I was at the office late last night so I didn't have time to grab a bite at home before poker. Feeling a bit peckish I decided to stop at Anna's Taqueria for a carnitas burrito (super, works, extra salsa). Expecting both a hunt for a parking space and a crowded Anna's I was very pleasantly surprised to find an open space right in front and no line inside. I was in an out in about a minute. I then went on to win $12 at poker. Coincidence?

Word of the Week: Crisis [Apr. 12th, 2004|10:16 am]
I was recently reminded that the Chinese character fro the word ‘crisis’ contains the symbols for both ‘danger’ and ‘opportunity’. Something to keep in mind. Since kanji tattoos are all the rage (or were about two years ago) the kanji for ‘crisis’ would be an excellent choice.

The past 18 months have been a major crisis for me. Danger and opportunity abounded. I believe I’ve made use of the opportunity. I’ve made mistakes as well, but I regret very few of them.

A friend of mine once told me that times like these are Fucking Growth Opportunities, which is the same thing as the formula ‘crisis=danger+opportunity’.

How much evil genius am I? [Apr. 12th, 2004|10:12 am]
I AM 66% EVIL GENIUS!
66% EVIL GENIUS
Evil courses through my blood. Lies and deceit motivate my evil deeds. Crushing the weaklings and idiots that do nothing but interfere in my doings.

Best Idea of the Weekend: Not Jumping with Both Feet [Apr. 12th, 2004|10:07 am]
Seems I have a tendency to jump into things without looking where I’m jumping. This isn’t new news, but I did avoid doing it this weekend. I had some help from several external forces for which I am grateful, but I think I learned something about myself that will be useful in the future.

Worst Idea of the Weekend: Playing poker after the accident [Apr. 12th, 2004|10:06 am]
I had a minor accident in a parking lot this weekend. It was totally freak and there was just cosmetic damage to my car. However it pissed me off. I then went to play poker and proceeded to loose $40. I rarely loose money playing poker, and have never lost even close to $40. Any idiot would see that I was off my game because of the accident. Even I saw it while I was playing, but I had gone temporarily insane. By one definition insanity is doing the same thing (playing like crap) and expecting different results (winning instead of loosing). The silver lining: I can only play better next time, right?

What I'm eating: Squeez n' Go [Apr. 5th, 2004|03:09 pm]
Colleague of mine gave me Squeez n' Go. Seems her four year-old son had a fit at the grocery store and demanded she buy them only to refuse to eat them once they got home. So she brought them in and foisted them off on us.

What is a Squeez n' Go you might ask? A tube of pudding. That doesn't need refrigeration. Chocolate flavered and non-fat.

If, like me, you are wary of dairy products that require no refrigeration, then you are like me. Wary, wary, wary. However I pride myself in my eclectic palette, and I figured the results of eating a Squeez n' Go could be:

1) Tasty snack
2) Sick day
3) Funny story
4) Any two of the above

Turns out its 1 + 3 (tasty snack and funny story). Because a tube of chocolate pudding called a Squeeze n' Go is comedy gold, and it tasted pretty good.

If you want to know more check them out at:

http://www.squeezngo.com/sng_learn.html

Here's what they say about their product:

"Squeez 'n Go is the first-ever portable pudding in a tube that does not need refrigeration, making it the perfect snack for anywhere - at home, at the park, in the car - on the go!

Whether you're skateboarding, roller blading or biking, you need to eat to keep you going. Creamy, rich, delicious Squeez 'n Go is preservative-free and comes in six "SWEET" flavors..."

I ask you this question, faithful reader(s). Why do they put the word sweet in both all caps AND quotes?

I expect to see a lot of Squeeze n' Go in military rations and school lunches in the very near future.

One last thing. Where is the X in the name of this product? The loss of the e at the end of squeeze, the n' instead of and, and the mention of skateboarding in the marketing copy marks this as a product aimed at teens and extreme sports enthusiasts. Seems to me it should be called Xsuqeez n' Go. Or maybe Xsqueez Me.

Best Idea of the Weekend: Escapism [Apr. 5th, 2004|11:25 am]
Sometimes you just need to get away and have fun. That was my weekend, mixed in with some very not fun stuff. The fun: steak dinner with red wine, American Splendor, Alias, waffles, more Alias, poker, Hellboy, more poker, lo mein, coffee, pancakes, Indiana Jones, more Alias, Red Sox season opener, pizza, wings, yet more Alias.

Worst Idea of the Weekend: Turning the Key [Apr. 5th, 2004|11:21 am]
Friends of mine are out of town. I needed to do laundry. My out of town friends have laundry at their place, and I had access. Went over to watch a DVD and do laundry. The key to their top lock got stuck. Played with it a lot in an effort to either open the door or get the key out. Snapped the key off in the lock. Called a locksmith who charged $70 to come over with a wrench and pull the key fragment out of the lock but who wasn’t skilled enough to then pick the lock. Ended up back at home to watch the DVD and at another friend’s who had laundry but no drier. Blarg.

Watching: Alias [Apr. 5th, 2004|11:15 am]
I knew Alias was going to be good, which is one of the reasons I avoided it. Kind of like my relationship with the X Files. Alias has a lot of similarities to the X Files actually, and probably appeals to the same crowd. In terms of look both feature good looking government agents who drive large American cars a lot, and both are often brilliant but with some weak side stories. One of the things I like most about Alias is that you can start and stop it mid-episode. That’s almost impossible with the Sopranos. Alias is almost like a book in that respect. I love well-told stories, so I’ve been totally sucked in. If you haven’t seen Alias, add it to your Netflix queue today!

Worst Idea of the Day: Popcorn [Apr. 1st, 2004|10:22 am]
Yes, another post about going to the movies last night! Aren't you a lucky reader? Yes, yes you are. On with the post...

The popcorn at big theaters is now officially inedible. They pre-cook it so its mostly stale, and you have to add the "butter flavoring" yourself which means either you only put it on the top, or you have to go through some serious gymnastics to remove some of your popcorn and add the topping in the middle and then put the rest of the popcorn back in the container. Even if you go through this madness you're still left with stale popcorn partially covered in "butter flavoring". Craptastic.

I don't even need to go into the cost issue. Lg. popcorn + lg. drink cost the same as the garlic chicken bun vermicelli dish I had for dinner.

In contrast small theaters often have good popcorn. The creme de la creme is the Somerville Theater (a mere two blocks from my apartment). They offer fresh popcorn with real butter, and it is so good I sometimes stop by to get some when I'm not seeing a movie. I know that the cost and labor of making this popcorn is prohibitive to large chain theaters, but I really need to internalize that info and just stop getting the crappy large theater popcorn.

I've got a hard life, don't I?

Best Idea of the Day: Midweek movie night [Apr. 1st, 2004|10:19 am]
As you probably just read I saw a movie last night. I don't usually see movies in the theater midweek because it involves public transportation and $10 tickets. However last night I got to use a gift card so the price was more then reasonible, and the train ride home was surprisingly short. Big Fun!
